Houston Marathon Trials

[ADD TAGS HERE - THIS IS OPTIONAL]

Jesse Davis and Jackie Dikos represented Personal Best Training in the 2012 Olympic Trials Marathon in Houston on January, 14th.  Both Jesse and Jackie had a frustrating time managing freakish injuries during their trials buildup and ran very close to what I thought  was the best for which we could hope.  Jesse was 68th of

Tecumseh Trail Time

Lucas McCabe, Kenny Nichols, Liz May, and Amy Herrin ran the Tecumseh Trail Marathon on Saturday.  Returning from his Monumental Marathon success Lucas placed 2nd on the trail with a 3:08:21.  This is almost a half hour slower than last month on the roads.  This should give you an idea of the trail difficulty and why this course is something that helps runners remember their Tecumseh experience for a long time.  Great jo

A Weekend to Remember (Monumental & NYC)

It was a very special and memorable weekend of racing.  Saturday was the Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon.  Blake Roberson found the 4th time was the charm as he figured out the marathon and was able to finish with his fastest miles of the day and lead the yellow Athletic Annex singlets across the finish line in 2:40:42 (PR).

Marine Corps Marathon

Published in

The Marine Corps Marathon beat me in 2006 so I wanted revenge when I went back to try again this year. I'll call the result a draw! I ran the first two miles 30 seconds per mile slower than my goal pace and made it through the first 8 miles of hills without doing too much damage to my legs.

For those I missed...

Friends,

I am sending this email to you because in some way you reached out to me after my September 1 bike crash.  Please forgive any presumptuousness that you would be interested in an update and I am sure I will be embarrased to have missed someone on this email that should have been included.

Fox Valley Marathon 2011

Coach suggested that we give race reports here in hopes that any race, good or bad, can be a helpful learning tool for others. I know I've learned a lot reading about and hearing about others' races. I hope this proves to be helpful to someone down the road.

Weekend at the Races (October 15 & 16)

[ADD TAGS HERE - THIS IS OPTIONAL]

The highlights this week come from Indianapolis, Columbus and Grand Rapids.  The weekend started on a very good note with Lucas McCabe winning the Indianapolis Half Marathon in 1:17:04.  Art Letzler was just a few minutes behind in 1:22:16.  Lisa DeVries had a top 10 finish in 1:36:31.  All 3 plan to run the Monumental Marathon in 3 weeks.  Cindy Reynolds completed her first half marathon on the hills and in the wind in

Lack of clear directions cost Aziz the win in Columbus.  He was on pace for a sub 1:04 half marathon close to the finish when things went wrong.  Here is a link to an article about this and the other races yesterday in Columbus.

Chicago marathon 2011

Sunday's was my 6th Chicago marathon and my lucky 13th marathon overall (6 Chicago, 5 Boston, NYC, and Tecumseh). Not sure what my favorite marathon is but I certainly know it's not Tecumseh and I'm not in love with the bridges of NYC although I want another shot there. I love Chicago for the crowds, location, spectator friendly course, and how fast the course is. I prefere to run in early October over November due to my peak training is usually mid August. As most of us are now aware of, it's hard to wait until November when you're ready in September.

Chicago Marathon

Published in

I ran the Chicago Marathon this past Sun. Oct. 9, 2011. This was my first marathon and I am extremely pleased with myself to have completed it. I am not a fast runner, finishing in 5:26:11, but am none the less pleased to have completed it! I have had knee issues for about the 4 weeks leading up to the marathon, so was not sure how I would do. I decided to give it my best shot as I had invested so much time and effort in the training and decided I would finishing walking if I had to. I was able to run the whole thing!

Chicago Marathon & Evansville Half Marathon

Let's start with the highlights from this past weekend.  John Stewart ran a brilliant race in conditions really too warm for running fast marathon times.  He PR'd by taking 4:30 off of his time from last year under similar conditions in Chicago.

Pike Township Education Foundation Race for Education

The Pike Township Education Foundation is putting on the "Race for Education" -- a 5-mile competitive run with a 3-mile fun run and 1-mile kids run on Saturday 10/30. Tri's at Eagle Creek

Hi Gang,
The next two Saturdays there is a Tri at the park so we will meet at the playground. And enterance at the 71st street gate may be better also.
See you there!

Howl at the Moon

The Howl at the Moon 8 hour race was held today and the running club was very well represented. Congrats to all who ran today with many placing very well in their age groups.
Matt Moody, you will have to get used to your wife wearing her bling around.
To those who read the rules the scorers are never wrong! This is a rare case where I benifited from them as when I checked my watch when I got home I had ran 12 loops instead of the 13 I was credited!
To those who I finished in front of when I should have been behind I apologize.
Again, GREAT JOB by all!

Thank You

To all who have sent me cards or offered their condolences at the recent passing of my mother, May God Bless you and thank you.
Those whom have lost parents already know how it can hurt. Her parents, my grandparents, are 96 and 94. I thought she would be here longer!
She found out she had cancer June 5th and passed on July 4th!
Thank you again for your outpouring.
Kenny

Tri this Sat.

Hi Gang,
This Sat. the 18th there is a Tri at the park. So we will meet at the playground at 7:30 am and it may be faster for you to enter the park by the 71st street gate.
Also I am not yet sure if I will be there Tuesday night so if I'm not the workout is to do a progressive run of 4-6 miles starting at an easy pace and each mile after go a little harder. Add a warm up and cool down after to get your total miles.
Have a great week.

Mini Marathon

My congrats to all who did the Mini this past Saturday! The weather turned out good, I was afraid after the cold and wind last year that we would have HOT temps this year.
And we also had several PR's. Great job!
Also, thanks again to the Annex for having a tent for us to meet and recover at plus refreshments. And again Mary took good care of all!

Mini entry to transfer

Both my wife and my daughter have decided not to run in this year's Mini. I already have a transfer in place for my daughter's entry but have one more left to transfer if anyone knows a runner needing to get it.

Saturday, March 12

There will be a trail race at Eagle Creek tomorrow.  Though registration and the start is at Mount Pleasant rather than the Beach, we will meet at the playground to give us more exit options in the event overflow parking moves to the beach.  See you at 8!

Tuesday, February 8 Group Workout

After recon reports from the Monon Trail at the Art Letzler Center and Monon Center, and Eagle Creek it seems to be clear that these areas are not in good shape.  Eagle Creek seems to be the best of the three.  Therefore after consulting Kenny we have decided that we will meet at Eagle Creek at 5:30 pm at the 56th Street upper parking lot for an easy run.  I

But seriously folks...

I will not claim an abundance of common sense, but I think we might apply the little I have and forgo the fun and games tonight.  I do not want us risking life and limb to get there let alone run in the elements.  Find a treadmill, indoor track, exercise bike or something else that will cause you to breath harder and sweat.  See you Saturday! -ME

Spring Season Meeting and Tuesday Runs

We will have our spring meeting full of information and cool people on Sunday, January 30 at the Athletic Annex at 5:00pm.

We will resume Tuesday Group Runs on Tuesday, February 1 at 5:30pm.  Stay tuned for location.  If the ground is clear we will be at the Art Center.  If not, we will have another location.

Merry Christmas

Hi Gang,
Just wanted to tell you all that I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
It has been a great pleasure to know you all this past year!
The best for you and yours in 2011!

Tuesday Group Runs

After consulting with Kenny this morning I have decided to put the Tuesday group runs on hold for a few weeks.  The sum of darkness, bad footing, lack of impending races of importance, the lure of running in daylight and I daresay indoor options have diminished the Tuesday group at this time of year to a size that it has become a stretch to call it a group.  We will plan to return to Tuesday night group runs on January 18.  Now with the date set you can place your bets on the heaviest snowfall of January 2011.  If you would like company

Roy's PR

At the recent Outer Banks marathon on 11-14 Roy set a modern day (for him) PR of 3:21. The course was not a PR course.
Now, just 13 days later he went even faster at 3:19 in Miss!
Congratulations Roy on a job very well done.
Also, we are having a team fall dinner Tuesday night in Broad Ripple. If you are coming and haven't let us know please e-mail or call Matt to let us know you will be there.

Half and Full Marathons

Congrats to all who ran this past weekend, what a GREAT job by all in both races. We had both PR's and Boston qualifiers set, way to go!
Roy and I are meeting in the Art Center at 4:30 because of the time change and you all are welcome to join us.
Again, very well done!

Congratulations to our Marathon and Half Marathon Runners!

Saturday Morning Option

Hey Gang,

As was posted and announced earlier there is a tri at the park this Saturday.  Because the tri uses parts of all the marked courses it makes a marathon goal pace run very difficult even with GPS units that do not like tree coverage.

Tri at Eagle Creek

Hi Gang,
It looks like there will be Tri's at the park on the 21st and 28th so we will be meeting at the playground parking lot those two days. Also, traffic may be heavy at the 56th St. gate so you might be better to enter at the 71st St gate.

Early Start

With the hot and humid weather we are experiencing, it is a good idea for those of you running long to consider starting earlier than 7:30.  I know several of you have this plan for tomorrow morning.  If you do choose to start early it would be good if you still plan to come by for our group start at 7:30.  That allows for others at your pace that do not start early to still enjoy your company for a few miles.

Great picnic

Thanks to Liz May & all who turned out for the 1st annual picnic Sunday. It was a nice day and good to spend time with all who came. To those who could not be there this year, you were missed and I hope that you make the next one.

Thank You!

Double Your Pleasure this weedend

Hi Gang,
I hope that you all have signed up for the Personal Best 5 mile race. Coach Matt says that he likes handing out awards to running club members in the age groups but he also likes seeing you run hard to win them!
And just when you think that the fun can get no better, Lizzie May is hosting the first annual picnic at Zionsville Lion Club park at 11 am. Sunday. After church bring your family and a covered dish for fun, fellowship and vollyball.
Hope to see you all twice this weekend!

Tri at Eagle Creek

Hi Guys,
This Saturday, the 17th, there is a tri at the park so we will be meeting at the playground parking lot.
Also, Liz and Dick plus others are doing the RAIN ride across Indiana Saturday morning. Good luck to all as they are doing around 160 miles on bikes.
Sorry about the confusion this past Saturday morning as we didn't know there was a 5K being held there.
Have a great week!

Sat. at Eagle Creek

Just to remind you that we will be meeting at the playground as there is a Tri this weekend the 19th.
Also, cheer on your coach as he is making his debut in a sprint Tri!

Saturday AM at Eagle Creek

Just to remind you all that were not there Tuesday nite that we will start at 7:30 AM this Saturday AM June 5th. See you then.

Mini Marathon

Again my congrats to all who did the Mini and Boston. Great job by all! Even with the cold temps and strong wind you all did VERY well.
Also, the Annex tent was very well received and Mary Sheilds is still a great hostess. As always it is a great pleasure to know and work with you all!
Kenny

Thanks Athletic Annex!

A huge thanks to the Annex for hosting the post-race tent at the Mini! As always, a great place to replenish and swap TALL TALES about our race experiences! Special thanks to Mary Shields for putting together all the refreshments!...and, Doug Ashton for running the gatorade stand while cheering at mile 11!

Tonight's Workout

We will have great running weather for the workout tonight.  The plan is 2 x 800, 1 x 1600, 2 x 800.  This may sound intimidating, but it is all about effort.  This is not a race and you will not be competing against anyone but you.  However, having others around does make it easier to do the work.  I will give the specifics of effort and recovery and an alternate workout tonight at the Indianapolis Art Center lower parking lot at 5:45.  I hope you will join in the fun!

Jesse Davis PRs on way to 21st in US Half Marathon Champs

Jesse said he was with a group of 4 men most of the way and felt comfortable until the last mile.  This is his second half marathon PR in a few months.  He ran 1:06:44 in the fall on a course that had a great deal of downhill, so to come back with a big PR at the National Championships is very impressive.  Going into the race it was hard to tell Jesse's fitness level because of the weather and it is hard to duplicate standard workouts from his Chicago buildup.  Most impressive

Due to popular demand the Tuesday workout is on the move.  This week (December 15) we will meet at Eagle Creek at 5:30.  Please park outside the park at 56th Street and Reed Road.  The park may close before the run is done and I do not want you to have to drive through the woods to get out.  We will be back at the Annex on December 22.  Stay tuned for new locations throughout the winter.  Please call me at 317.872.0000 with any questions.

Time & Location Change for Tuesdays

Starting this Tuesday (November 3, 2009) we will move from the Art Center to the Athletic Annex.  The start time will be 15 minutes earlier at 5:30 pm.  The loss of more daylight and the coming colder weather make this necessary.  Stay tuned as we might rotate the location a few times this winter.  Saturday runs continue to be at Eagle Creek at 8:00 am.  See you soon.

My 1st Tri

This is the race report I sent to Phil Carr after my first triathlon on Sunday at Tri Indy.

Tri on 22nd instead of 15th

Hi Gang,
I was wrong on the dates, this Sat. we will meet as usual in the parking lot at the start line. The sprint Tri is on the 22nd and we will meet at the playground.
Matt will make his Tri debut downtown on the 16th.
Sorry for the misinformation.
Kenny

Sat. Aug 15th at Eagle Creek

Hi Gang,
Just to remind you that this coming Sat. is another Tri at the park so we will be meeting at the playground. Also the 71st gate may be easier to enter.
Your Coach is planning on making his Tri debute there so be sure to cheer him on!
To all of you who ran the Personal Best 5 mile this past Sat., great job! We were represented very well in our presence and results!

Saturday, July 18

This Saturday there will be a triathlon at Eagle Creek Park so we will meet at our alternate location.  I will look forward to seeing you at the playground that is midpoint on the main road between 56th and 71st Street entrances.  I recomment using the 71st St entrance to avoid the bulk of the tri traffic.  See you then!

Hi Gang,
As I didn't check my e-mail till late Sat AM I was unaware of a 5K Sat. AM at the park, thanks Patty.
Sorry for the inconvenieance and for my lack of forwarning. Hope that you all still had a good run and have a great rest of the weekend. See you all Tuesday at the Monon.

He said to tell everyone hello.

Hi Guys,
Just a reminder that this Sat. we will be meeting at the playground at 7:30am do to a tri going on. It is located by the 2 mile mark of the 5K. Also, you might enter the park by the 71st gate to avoid traffic backup.

Saturdays meeting site

Hi Guys,
To remind you all that we will be meeting at 7:30am the Sat. at the playground as there is a tri going on. Close to the 2 mile mark of the 5K. Also enter at the 71st St. gate has traffic should be better.

Good luck in Traverse City Liz!

Here's to a successful Boston qualifying attempt!

I hope you're feeling better by Saturday!

Mini finishers

Congratulations to all who finished this years mini.

I hope that your times were as good or better than you expected. We were blesssed with perfect wheather, much better than predicted. Also, Mary from the Annex, did a great job as hostess at the tent again this year.

Thanks to all of you who were able to find it and stopped by. And how about those metals! They were designed by Becky's son. She works at the Annex also.

Hope to see you Tuesday at the Monon, Kenny

Ok, so it's an old Led Zepplin reference. It was just to get your attention. This post is a quick personal reflection on this past 5-1/2 months of training for my upcoming Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon.

This will be my sixth marathon, but the first time I have completed every single day of training, except one, 2-mile training run. And, it's because I decided this year that I wasn't going to let the Indiana snow, ice or drifts on the sidewalks keep me from training - even one day less! Yes, I joined a health club and married a treadmill!

Armstrong's Drug-Testing Program Scrapped

[ADD TAGS HERE - THIS IS OPTIONAL]

Lance Armstrong scrapped his much-publicized plan to set up an independent drug-testing program on Wednesday because of high costs and nearly impossible logistics.

When Armstrong announced his comeback last year, the seven-time Tour de France winner said he wanted to prove he was clean, and was teaming with anti-doping expert Don Catlin, who would test him and post the results online.

But Catlin told The Associated Press that after months of negotiations, both sides realized the program wasn't workable this year.
